Gotchas

Contains notes that might help readers overcome problems working through the book's examples based on individual computer settings.
  • Pls use the XAMPP version recommended in the book and not a later XAMPP version if you want to run a Zen Cart store on your local computer instead of a remote server. This will save you effort and time in further configurations. Do note that XAMPP 1.7.2 runs PHP 5.3 which, by default, is not compatible with Zen Cart 1.3.8a or below!
  • If you are stuck with working with PHP 5.3 (especially if your web host has made the move recently), refer to this Zen Cart announcement to find out what changes you need to make in order for your Zen Cart store to function properly.
  • Some users may encounter problems connecting to their Zen Cart store when running XAMPP on their local computer and using the FireFox browser. In such situations, make sure your FireFox browser menu is not set to File > Work Offline. Alternatively, you can run your tests with Windows Explorer.
  • Pg 34, for users who intend to install XAMPP on Windows Vista, the procedure is slightly different from that of the book. You would need to turn off "UAC", temporarily turn off any anti-virus, then install XAMPP. Only after Zen Cart is installed (pg 52), then turn on "UAC" and your anti-virus again.

  • Pg 35, if you have problems starting Apache from the XAMPP Control Panel. Make sure there are no other applications hogging port 80 on your computer. These applications might include Skype, Microsoft IIS, etc.

  • Pgs 36-37, if you have a problem setting up a domain on your local machine with a period in the domain name (e.g. www.example.com), go to your web browser and check your proxy server settings.

For example, in Internet Explorer 7, you can go to Tools > Internet Options to open a dialog box. Navigate to the Connections tab, click LAN settings and uncheck the "Use a proxy server for your LAN" option.

  • Pg 38, step 5, if you encounter problems sending a test email message after setting up your mail server, it might be due to the presence of a space or period in your XAMPP installation directory which can cause problems on certain Windows XP configurations. To solve this problem, re-install your XAMPP server into a directory without any space or period in its path. For example, install into "C:\server\xampp" instead of "C:\Program Files\My.Directory\xampp".
  • Pg 41, step 7, if nothing happens after you add a new mail user account to your mail server, make sure the value you enter into the Username field does not include the domain name (i.e. "example.com"). For example, enter the value storekeeper and not storekeeper@example.com. All values under the column "Username" of Table C-1 on pg 389 erroneously contains the domain name.

  • Pg 43, Step 4, if this is the first time you are creating an account in your Thunderbird account, you will notice an Outgoing Server field in the Account Wizard dialog box. You can choose to enter localhost or mail.example.com.
  • Pg 63, if you see a blank screen when trying to log in to the Admin Console. Try adjusting your firewall settings on your Windows machine to see if the situation improves. If that still does not help, edit the file "admin/includes/local/skip_version_check.ini" and set the field version_check=off. Do NOT do this on a 'live' site as you want to be informed of security and software updates as and when they are available from Zen Cart.

  • Pg 63, if you attempt to log in to the Admin Console, you should use the values you entered for the Administrator Username and Administrator's Password fields which you entered in the Admin Setup screen on page 51. Do not click on the resend password hyperlink on the Admin Console's Log In screen during this time as your email will only be configured in the next chapter.
